Luxury Resorts in Koh Samui (2026)

The best 5-star resorts and private pool villas in Koh Samui — Four Seasons, Banyan Tree, Ritz-Carlton, W and more compared by location, what you actually get and price.

Four Seasons Koh Samui resort review. Plays on YouTube after you click.

Koh Samui has more genuinely world-class 5-star resorts than most travellers expect for a Thai island. The Four Seasons and Banyan Tree sit at the top of the market — from 59,000 THB and 22,000 THB per night respectively — but the island’s second tier of international luxury (Ritz-Carlton, W Koh Samui, Vana Belle) starts around 8,500–13,500 THB, which is serious value for the category. The northeast coast holds the best-maintained properties and calmest swimming water; the west coast at Taling Ngam gives you the sunsets; the south at Lamai has the most privacy. This guide cuts to who each property actually suits.

Quick facts

The baht figures on this page are 2026 planning bands, written so you can see the gap between properties. They are not a quote for your dates. Open the hotel link before you book. Pool-villa detail is in the private pool guide. Hotels that are actually on the sand are in Koh Samui hotels on the beach.

  • Top of the market: Four Seasons, all ocean-view villas with private pools, from about 59,000 THB in this guide’s band.
  • All pool villas, south coast: Banyan Tree, above Lamai, from about 22,000 THB here.
  • Recognisable luxury, lower band: Ritz-Carlton near Choeng Mon, from about 8,500 THB here.
  • Sunset: InterContinental at Taling Ngam, from about 7,000 THB here.

The short version

  • Best resort on the island: Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui — all ocean-view villas, private pools, from ~59,000 THB/night

What separates real luxury here

Koh Samui’s 4-star market is crowded and generally good. What pushes a property into genuine 5-star territory on this island comes down to a few things:

Private pools. At the Four Seasons, Banyan Tree and W Koh Samui, every villa has its own pool. At the Ritz-Carlton and Vana Belle, most room categories include a private plunge pool. Properties that offer “access to shared pools” aren’t in the same tier, however well-reviewed they are.

Beach or setting. The best luxury properties here either sit directly on a private stretch of sand (Banyan Tree, InterContinental, Garrya Tongsai Bay) or are positioned for dramatic ocean views from a hillside or cliff (Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton). The combination of both — private sand plus elevated sightlines — is rare.

Staff-to-guest ratio. The markers that separate a 5-star from a well-priced 4-star in Thailand are almost always service-related: whether a villa host greets you by name, whether breakfast is timed to your preference without asking, whether transport requests happen without friction. Read recent TripAdvisor reviews for these service signals before booking.

The ultra-luxury tier (from ~22,000 THB/night)

Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui

The Four Seasons on Koh Samui sits on the northeast coast at Ang Thong, in a sheltered cove with views across the Gulf. It is 73 ocean-view villas — no hotel-style rooms, no corridors, no crowds at a shared pool. Every villa has a private infinity pool. The entry-level Ocean View Villas start at roughly 59,000–76,000 THB per night depending on the season; the multi-bedroom residence villas are considerably more.

The property runs 24-hour butler service, has two restaurants (the open-sided Koh Thai Kitchen is the better of the two), a spa, and a beach that the resort maintains exclusively for guests. It is consistently one of the highest-rated hotels in Thailand on all major platforms.

The honest caveat: the beach at this cove is smaller than at Chaweng or Lamai, and the location is quiet. If the beach strip, walking markets, or Chaweng nightlife are part of your trip, you will need transport to reach them — about 25 minutes away. If you are here to be entirely inside the resort, that’s not a problem.

Best for: couples or honeymooners who want the finest property on the island and won’t be leaving the resort much.

Banyan Tree Samui

Banyan Tree Samui is on the south coast, above Lamai Beach, with 88 all-pool villas spread across a hillside above a private beach. All villas have private infinity pools — some facing the ocean, some looking over tropical hillside. The spa is one of the best on the island.

Rates average around 22,700 THB/night; high-season pool villas with an ocean panorama will go higher. The property feels more removed than the Ritz-Carlton or Vana Belle — Lamai Beach town is close but the resort itself is its own world.

The 5 on-site restaurants mean you can eat well without going anywhere, which matters when the nearest good independent options are a 10-minute drive. This is a place for two people who want privacy and don’t need the Chaweng scene nearby.

Best for: those who want an all-in-one luxury villa stay on the quieter south coast. Pairs naturally with a day or two exploring Lamai — see the Chaweng vs Lamai guide for the area breakdown.

The premium tier (8,500–22,000 THB/night)

Ritz-Carlton Koh Samui

The Ritz-Carlton on the northeast coast is the most recognisable international brand on the island that isn’t at Four Seasons pricing. It sits in a cliffside position near Choeng Mon with private pool villas, ocean views and direct beach access.

Choeng Mon Beach, Koh Samui, a sheltered bay with long-tail boats Rates start around 8,500–14,000 THB/night depending on room category and season — about a quarter of the Four Seasons rate for a comparable physical setting.

The property has 67 villas and suites, several restaurants (the seaside terrace dining is worth it), a spa, and water sports on its private beach. The northeast location is good: close to the airport, calm water, and 10–15 minutes to Chaweng if you want it. Guests consistently rate the service as matching the brand’s reputation.

Best for: travellers who want a globally-recognised 5-star stay and Four Seasons pricing is out of reach. The Ritz-Carlton delivers the level.

Vana Belle, a Luxury Collection Resort

Vana Belle sits on a private beach between Chaweng and Bophut — closer to the action than the northeast properties, without being in it. It’s a Marriott Luxury Collection property, which means it has to meet a global brand standard while retaining its own character. Rates start around 13,500 THB/night; suite and villa categories with larger pools run 20,000–26,000 THB in high season.

All rooms include a private plunge pool. The beach is the resort’s strongest asset — fine sand, good swimming, and because the resort controls it, never crowded. The design leans contemporary Thai; the restaurant has a solid reputation among residents on the island.

If you are a Marriott Bonvoy member, Vana Belle also works well on points — it’s a category property where point redemptions are competitive with paid rates.

Best for: Marriott loyalists, those who want 5-star private-pool rooms within 15 minutes of Chaweng, or anyone who wants the flexibility of being near the island’s main beach strip without staying on it.

W Koh Samui

The W Koh Samui is an all-villa property on Mae Nam beach on the north coast — 74 pool villas, each with a private outdoor pool. The design is the most contemporary of any 5-star on the island: it looks different from the Thai-colonial aesthetic most properties here lean on. Rates from around 13,000–15,000 THB/night in low season; higher in December–January.

Mae Nam is one of the quieter beaches on the island — long, clean, with far fewer tourists than Chaweng or Lamai.

The W brings cocktail-bar energy to a beach that’s otherwise calm. The on-site restaurant and beach bar are decent; for more variety you’ll want a scooter or Grab.

The Mara restaurant serves a rotating set menu that gets good write-ups; the infinity pool facing the Gulf is the social centre of the property in the evenings.

Best for: younger couples, design-oriented travellers, or anyone who wants an all-villa-with-pool experience without the Four Seasons rate. Also works well for small groups who want a villa each.

Garrya Tongsai Bay Samui

Garrya Tongsai Bay is the outlier on this list — not a major international brand, but arguably the most distinctive setting. It sits in its own private bay on the northeast coast, on 28 acres of dense tropical garden that drops to a sheltered beach. It has been here for decades (originally as the Tongsai Bay, now relaunched as Garrya, an Accor brand) and the property shows the confidence of a resort that knows what it is.

66 rooms, all with sea views. The villas with private pools are the pick; the suites with outdoor bathtubs facing the water are an alternative. Rates around 14,000 THB/night, with free breakfast included — which is unusual at this tier and meaningfully reduces the effective cost. Three restaurants, two pools, a wellness spa, and a beach that genuinely belongs to the resort.

The northeast location keeps it close to the airport (15 minutes) and to Chaweng (20–25 minutes) without being in the tourist corridor.

Best for: travellers who want a private-bay feel and a resort with genuine character over brand recognition. Good for honeymoons where the setting matters more than the logo.

The entry 5-star tier (from ~7,000 THB/night)

InterContinental Koh Samui Resort by IHG

The InterContinental is on Taling Ngam on the southwest coast — the only major 5-star hotel facing west, which means it gets the best sunsets on the island. Rates start from 7,000 THB/night, making it the most price-accessible entry on this list. It occupies 22 acres, has 6 pools, and sits on a quieter beach away from the main tourist circuit.

The trade-off is location. Taling Ngam is 30–40 minutes from Chaweng by road. If you plan to spend time in central Koh Samui — markets, beach clubs, restaurants — you will be driving there and back regularly. If the resort itself is the plan, that’s not relevant. Guests consistently rate the food, beach and service well; the sunset views from the grounds are legitimately among the island’s best.

Best for: couples who want a secluded 5-star experience with evening light that the east coast can’t offer, without paying Banyan Tree prices.

Centara Reserve Samui

Centara Reserve is the flagship of the Thai Centara chain, reimagined from the old Centara Grand Beach Resort Samui at Chaweng. Its colonial design is the most architecturally distinctive on the island — white facades, covered walkways, old-world details — and the south end of Chaweng beach it sits on is calmer and quieter than the central strip.

Rates from around 7,500 THB/night. Breakfast, WiFi and parking included. Four restaurants on site and the beach is a short walk from most rooms. Ranked in the top 10 hotels in Koh Samui consistently.

What it isn’t: an all-villa, all-private-pool property. The rooms are excellent, but the shared pools and more conventional hotel layout place it in a different tier than Banyan Tree or the Four Seasons. For what it costs, though, the positioning is hard to fault.

Best for: travellers who want a proper 5-star resort on Chaweng without the full pool-villa outlay, or anyone who appreciates architectural character over minimalist contemporary design.

How to choose

The decision splits roughly by what you’re optimising for:

You want…Best pick
The absolute best on the islandFour Seasons Resort Koh Samui
All-pool villas + serious privacyBanyan Tree Samui
Recognised 5-star at better valueRitz-Carlton Koh Samui
Near Chaweng but still 5-starVana Belle or Centara Reserve
The sunset viewsInterContinental Taling Ngam
A unique, secluded settingGarrya Tongsai Bay
All-villa property, contemporary styleW Koh Samui

On location: the northeast and north coast properties (Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, Garrya, W) are closest to the airport and have reliably calm water. The south-coast properties (Banyan Tree) are most secluded from tourist areas. The west coast (InterContinental) has the most dramatic light.

If private pools are the deciding factor, the Koh Samui private pool villas guide breaks down the full range from budget pool rooms upward. For a broader overview of the island’s areas and which base suits your trip, see the where to stay in Koh Samui guide.

Booking notes

High season pricing. Rates at all of these properties peak in December–January and the July–August school holiday window. The widest available discounts fall in May–June and September–October. The gap between high-season and shoulder rates at the Four Seasons can be 40–50%.

Brand loyalty. If you hold Marriott Bonvoy status, Vana Belle is the obvious play — elite benefits and point redemptions work here and the property genuinely merits its Luxury Collection designation. IHG Diamond members can find solid value at the InterContinental, particularly in low season.

Direct booking. Several of these properties (Four Seasons, Garrya) offer rates or inclusions on their direct sites that aren’t replicated on OTAs. Free breakfast being bundled into the Garrya rate is one example. Always compare direct before confirming on a booking platform.

What’s not on this list. Koh Samui also has a range of high-quality boutique 5-star properties — Hansar Samui at Bophut, the Kimpton Kitalay at Choeng Mon, SALA Samui Chaweng — that don’t have the brand recognition of a Ritz-Carlton or W but regularly outperform them on guest satisfaction scores. Those are covered in the beachfront hotels guide with area-specific context.
