Choeng Mon sits at the northeast tip of Koh Samui — a short drive from the airport and from Chaweng, but removed from the noise of both. The bay curves behind a wooded headland, giving it naturally sheltered water. Most of the resorts here are boutique or luxury, beach access is primarily through the properties that line the shore, and the area attracts couples and families rather than anyone looking for a bar strip.
The short version
- Best for: couples, families wanting calm water, upscale travellers who want quiet close to Chaweng
- Skip if: you want budget accommodation, a long beach, or easy public beach access
- Beach: calm, sheltered cove, good swimming, mostly accessed via resort properties
- From airport: ~15 min by taxi (฿200–250)
- From Chaweng: 15 min by scooter or taxi
- Dining: primarily resort restaurants; limited standalone options
The beach
Choeng Mon Beach is short — the bay runs roughly 600 metres — and the curve of the headland keeps the water calm in most conditions. This makes it good for swimming, paddleboarding, and kayaking, and it doesn’t pick up the swells that hit Chaweng and Lamai between October and December.
In practice, the beach is largely private. Several resorts have their own sections of sand, and while there is public access, parking is limited and day visitors are rare. That’s part of the appeal: it rarely feels crowded.
The resorts
SALA Samui Choengmon Beach Resort is the most prominent property, a pool-villa resort where the majority of rooms have private pools. Cape Fahn Hotel occupies a small private island at the far end of the bay, connected by a causeway; its 24 pool villas face open water on three sides. Both are high-end and priced accordingly. A handful of smaller boutique properties are available at more moderate rates.
Dining options are mostly resort restaurants. There are one or two standalone places on the access road, but if you’re staying in Choeng Mon for a week, you’ll want to make trips to Bophut or Chaweng for a proper spread of restaurant choice.
For families
Choeng Mon is one of the more practical family options on the island. The sheltered, calm water is good for children, the area is compact and safe, and there’s no party atmosphere to navigate. For activities, Chaweng is close enough to visit for a day trip. See Koh Samui with kids for more detail on what works well from this part of the island, and best beaches in Koh Samui for how Choeng Mon’s swimming conditions compare with other bays.
Getting around
Chaweng is about 15 minutes by scooter or taxi. The songthaew network doesn’t cover Choeng Mon as reliably as the main north-coast route, so you’ll likely depend on taxis or a rented scooter for day trips. Bophut is around 20 minutes west. See getting around Koh Samui for routes and current prices.
Getting here
From Samui Airport: taxi or songthaew, roughly 15 minutes. From the main west-coast piers at Nathon, allow 30–40 minutes depending on traffic. Choeng Mon isn’t on the main ring road, so it’s a short detour from the north-coast route.
Staying here
Budget accommodation doesn’t exist in Choeng Mon. The entry point is mid-range boutique; most properties are upper-mid to luxury. Browse /hotels/ for current rates. If Choeng Mon prices are outside your budget, Bophut offers similar calm and character at more varied price points, and Maenam is the most affordable north-coast option.
