Four days is enough to cover Koh Samui’s highlights without rushing. This plan works for most arrivals — if you fly in late on Day 1, compress the afternoon and don’t stress it.
The short version
- Day 1: Arrive, settle in, swim Chaweng, dinner
- Day 2: Island loop — Big Buddha, Bophut, Na Muang waterfalls, interior viewpoints
- Day 3: Ang Thong Marine Park full-day tour (book before you land)
- Day 4: Koh Phangan day trip or final beach morning before departure
One advance booking is non-negotiable: Ang Thong. Tours regularly sell out, especially December–April.
Before You Arrive
Read the best time to visit guide before buying flights — Koh Samui’s wet season runs at the opposite time of year from Phuket’s, and it matters.
Sort accommodation before you land. The where-to-stay guide covers the options by area and budget; browse properties at /hotels/. For getting around the island once you arrive — scooters, songthaews, private transfers — see the getting-around guide.
Day 1: Arrive + Chaweng
Afternoon: Clear immigration — Samui Airport is small, you’re through in 20–30 minutes. A private taxi to Chaweng runs ฿300–400; a shared songthaew (red pickup) is ฿100–150 but slower. Check in, drop your bags.
Head to Chaweng Beach. The northern end is cleaner and less packed with sunbed rentals — walk 10 minutes north from the central stretch if the main beach is crowded. Late afternoon light on the water is worth waiting for; the beach faces east so there’s no sunset here, but the early evening colour on the Gulf is good.
Evening: Chaweng has solid food if you go one block off the main beach road. The lake road parallel to the strip has a cluster of Thai restaurants that don’t cater exclusively to tour groups — see the Koh Samui food guide for specific picks.
Note: If you arrived tired, do only beach and food. Day 1 is intentional recovery, not sightseeing.
Day 2: Island Loop — North Coast and Interior
This is a full day of moving, best done by hired scooter (฿200–300/day) or by chartering a songthaew for the day (฿1,000–1,500). The route runs: Chaweng → Big Buddha → Bophut → Na Muang Waterfalls → interior viewpoint → back.
Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai) — 9:00am
Start early to beat the coach tours. The golden 12-metre Buddha sits on Ko Fan, a small island off the northeast coast connected by a short causeway. A naga-flanked staircase leads up to the statue. Shoulders and knees must be covered; sarongs are lent at the gate. Allow 45 minutes. Entry is free.
More detail on the temple and what to look for in the things-to-do guide.
Fisherman’s Village, Bophut — 10:30am
A 10-minute drive west along the coast. Bophut’s old Chinese shophouse street is the most atmospheric part of the island’s north coast. Have coffee, a late breakfast, or just walk the waterfront. If it’s a Friday evening, note this neighbourhood for your night plans — the Friday Walking Street market (from ~5pm) is the island’s best. See the Bophut area guide.
Na Muang Waterfalls — 12:30pm
Head south through the interior on Route 4169. Na Muang 1 is the main falls — a broad 20-metre cascade into a swimming pool. Cool off if you want; the water is worth it. Na Muang 2 is a 30-minute uphill walk further in and is quieter. No entry fee. Bring food or eat at the roadside stalls at the track’s base. Go both falls if you have energy; just Na Muang 1 if you’re conserving it for the afternoon.
Interior Viewpoint — 2:30pm
Several viewpoints on the central ridge give sight lines over both coasts simultaneously. The main one sits on Route 4169 between Chaweng and the interior — look for a concrete platform with a drinks vendor and parked scooters. Genuinely good on a clear day; not worth stopping for in rain.
Optional: Secret Buddha Garden — 3:30pm
If your ride can handle a steep rough track and you have energy: the Secret Buddha Garden is in the island’s southern interior. Around 50 moss-covered statues through dense jungle; ฿80–100 entry, open until 18:00. The access road is rough — honest assessment of your scooter’s capability before attempting.
Evening: Back in Chaweng or Bophut depending on where you’re based. Friday nights in Bophut: the market is the right call.
Day 3: Ang Thong Marine Park (Full Day)
Alarm at 7:00am. Tours depart from Na Thon or Maenam pier between 8:00 and 8:30am and return by 5pm. This must be booked before Day 3 — ideally before you land.
Standard big-boat group tours cost 1,200–1,500 THB (US$33–42) including lunch, snorkel gear, and park entry. Speedboat tours run 1,800–2,800 THB (US$50–78) and cover more of the archipelago faster. The park entrance fee (฿300 for foreign adults, ฿150 for children) is usually included but confirm with your operator.
A typical day covers: snorkelling on the outer reef, a 30–40 minute hike to the viewpoint on Koh Wua Talap (the panoramic shot over dozens of islands you’ll have seen in photos of Ang Thong), sea kayaking into the emerald lagoon on Koh Mae Ko, and lunch on the main island. Take shoes rather than sandals — the hike is steep and rocky.
If the park is closed: Ang Thong closes around 1 November to approximately 15 December due to sea conditions. Check the Ang Thong Marine Park guide for current status. Alternative for this day: a Koh Tao snorkel tour or a circumnavigation of Koh Samui by boat.
Evening: You’ll be back by 5pm, sun-tired and fed. A quiet dinner close to your accommodation works well here.
Day 4: Koh Phangan Day Trip or Final Morning
Option A — Koh Phangan
Ferries leave Maenam and Nathon piers from around 8am. The crossing to Thong Sala is 30–40 minutes by high-speed catamaran (฿200–300 one way, roughly US$6–8). The island is best on its quieter north and east coasts — Haad Yao, Bottle Beach, or Haad Rin on a non-Full Moon day. Return by 4–5pm to allow time to pack and get to the airport. Full logistics in the Koh Phangan day trip guide.
Option B — Slow morning
Sleep in. One more swim — try Lamai or Choeng Mon if you haven’t been. A final Thai massage. Pack by noon, check out, head for the airport for afternoon flights. Chaweng has the most taxi options for the airport run.
Day-by-Day Cost Summary
| Day | Main Activity | Estimated Cost (per person) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive, Chaweng beach and dinner | Accommodation + ฿200–400 food |
| 2 | Island loop by scooter + food | ฿400–700 |
| 3 | Ang Thong Marine Park tour | ฿1,200–2,800 (incl. lunch) |
| 4 | Koh Phangan ferry return or free | ฿400–600 or ฿0 |
Practical Notes
Transport: Songthaews connect the main beaches for ฿50–100 per person per leg. Scooter hire gives the most freedom for Day 2. See the getting-around guide for full detail.
Book ahead: Ang Thong is the one mandatory advance booking in this itinerary. Everything else can be arranged on arrival.
Have more than 4 days? Add Koh Tao for diving (one night minimum), explore Maenam or the west coast, or slow down at a beach you liked. The island rewards spending more time on fewer things.
